Estimated reading time: 3 MinutenMemmingen Airport is looking back on its most successful year to date, with over three million passengers using the airport. Southern Germany’s leading low-cost airport recorded a passenger number of 3,242,090, an increase of 14.8 percent compared to the previous year.
Growth and success factors
Memmingen Airport recorded unprecedented growth last year and continued to establish itself as southern Germany’s leading low-cost airport. Managing director Ralf Schmid explained that the 14.8 percent increase compared to the previous year was based not only on the classic holiday destinations, but also on the broad mix of destinations in Eastern Europe. This diversity attracts not only vacationers, but also people who travel to Germany for work or for family reunions. Schmid emphasized that commuters in the care sector and in the catering industry in particular use the airport as a link between home and work.
Popular travel destinations and flight movements
It was reported that Mallorca was the most visited destination, followed by destinations such as Sofia, Belgrade and Tirana, which recorded high passenger numbers. Last year the airport experienced over 31,000 flight movements, an increase of 7.8 percent. Within the scheduled flight segment there was a disproportionate growth of 15 percent, which accounts for the majority of the movements. Business flights have also increased continuously, which has significantly enriched the regional economy, explained Schmid.
International significance
Particular emphasis was placed on the airport’s international reach, demonstrated by flights from cities such as Vancouver, Los Angeles and even Kansai, Japan. Schmid explained that Memmingen Airport is a significant location advantage for medium-sized companies that need fast and efficient connections worldwide. FMM receives flights from all over the world, which strengthens the airport’s importance as an international hub.
Memmingen Airport as a job creator
Last year the airport impressed not only in terms of passengers, but also as an employer. At the beginning of the year, 309 people were employed, while the year ended with 379 employees, including 26 trainees and students. The airport was once again able to live up to its reputation as a ‘job machine’. These increases underline that Memmingen Airport is not only a hub for travelers, but also a driver for local employment.
Memmingen Airport GmbH relies on a strong combination of holiday destinations and Eastern European destinations to appeal to both holidaymakers and business commuters. Thanks to the support of partners such as Ryanair and Wizz Air as well as a committed employee base, the airport is continuously growing and increasing its importance as a hub in Europe.
