Dortmund Airport has had a promising start to 2025. In the first quarter, the number of passengers rose to 676,987, representing an increase of approximately 6.5 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year. However, disruptions caused by strikes and weather-related cancellations hampered growth.
Passenger growth despite challenges
Dortmund Airport reported a significant increase in passenger numbers in the first quarter of 2025. With 676,987 passengers compared to the previous year, the increase of more than 40,000 passengers amounted to approximately 6.5 percent. February was particularly significant, as despite the extra day in leap year 2024, over 24,000 additional passengers were counted, representing an increase of 12.5 percent. Despite the turbulent weather conditions and a one-day warning strike by the ver.di union at the beginning of the year, which completely shut down air traffic, the airport remains optimistic.
Increasing flight movements and new challenges
In addition to the rising passenger numbers, the airport reported an increase in flight movements in the first quarter, from 7,385 to 8,163 takeoffs and landings. Despite this positive development, Managing Director Ludger van Bebber expressed concerns about the coming months, as the withdrawal of Ryanair and the reduction of Eurowings’ services could slow future growth. However, the new routes and frequency increases from Wizz Air, Pegasus, and Condor will help keep the route network attractive.
Optimism despite market changes
Van Bebber indicated that the first-quarter success is giving Dortmund Airport a boost, but acknowledged that market-driven airline adjustments can impact growth. However, the airport is striving to offset lost passenger volumes as quickly as possible through new offerings. Wizz Air, Pegasus, and Condor will play a crucial role in achieving this goal.

The airport’s focus now lies on securing sustainable growth through strategic partnerships and service optimization. Dortmund Airport is committed to innovative solutions to address market challenges, continue to offer its passengers an excellent travel experience, and expand the hub’s regional economic importance.
